  • ABOUT CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY

Craniosacral therapy is now extensively practised around the world and continues to develop in popularity for a wide range of people.

It is a gentle but potent way of working with the body using light touch. People sometimes ask about the name “craniosacral therapy” and think it only refers to the head. In fact CST works with the whole person and changes may occur in body, mind and spirit during and after sessions.

When a practitioner places their hands lightly on you during a therapy session, they are using them to listen to you in much the same way that a counsellor might listen to your words. Your body responds to this sensitive touch by beginning to listen to itself. A feeling that you have been heard in the truest sense of the word is a common experience during and after a CST session.
Because it is so gentle and non-invasive, CST is suitable for everyone from newly-born babies to the elderly. Women often come during pregnancy, and mothers and their babies for problems associated with difficult or traumatic births. Letting go of tension and fear held in the body enables both mother and baby to settle into calmness.

How Does It Work?

CST supports your body’s innate ability to balance, restore and heal itself, as well as helping to reduce stress and build your underlying energy. The practitioner senses tensions in the body and helps to release them in a supported and comfortable way. During or after a session you may feel calm and energised, with increased clarity of mind and a feeling of well-being.
During your first session your practitioner will take a written case history, listening with care to the reasons for your visit. This part of the session is important, both for gathering information and to establish a good understanding with your practitioner. The session typically lasts an hour, although it can vary. You remain clothed and will usually lie face up or on your side, or you may be seated. The practitioner makes light contact with your head, the base of your spine and other areas, encouraging your body to relax and begin to make the changes it needs. Because the body functions as a whole, your practitioner may focus on areas other than where your symptoms occur.

Will Craniosacral Therapy Help ?

After a session there is occasionally a short period of adjustment as part of the healing process, when you may become more aware of symptoms. Sometimes people report relief after only one or two sessions. For long-standing problems further sessions may be needed. Some people find they benefit from regular treatment over an extended period and say that, as well as noticing improvement in their physical or emotional symptoms, they feel they have increased self-awareness and improved quality of life.

SERVICESBiodynamic Craniosacral with Trauma Relief Therapy

Anxiety is so common it can come to feel normal.

You can never deeply settle, sleep isn’t so refreshing, thoughts are persistent and scattered and life feels like surviving rather then thriving. Does this sound familiar ?

Maybe you’re haunted by memories, or you find yourself over-reacting to non threatening situations. Or you are plagued by irritability, depressiveness, social withdrawal, or anxiety.Trauma can cause mistrust, tension and difficult communication in our relationships.

It is now recognised that many of us live with unresolved traumas. Trauma which is essentially overwhelm can be caused by a single dramatic event, or during our early years in utero or at birth, including attachment and relational trauma as well as build up over time from a series of challenges.

The good news is – we are pretty resiliant and adaptable. But, just like we take care of our teeth by brushing and visiting a dentist our nervous systems need to be cared for, so we can process and transform whats being held in the body.

And some more good news is that Biodyanamic Craniosacral Therapy combined with approaches taken from Peter Levine’s Somatic Experiencing techniques can be very effective in down regulating our nervous systems to a more neutral and resiliant place. Because traumatic effect gets patterned into our body and neurological system, the most effective approaches combine talking therapy with the somatic body based approaches of Somatic Experiencing, Breath work, movemnet/gesture work and BCST.

The possibilities in someone with a well regulated nervous system are great. For someone who lives life feeling numb, or ready to run or fight at the slightest stimulus, the possibilities are far fewer.

So why not take care of your nervous system and enjoy a more harmonious life with more energy and focus and greater capacity for creativity, healing and connection with yourself and others.

  • ABOUT TRAUMA

What is Trauma ?

While events like natural disasters, wars, or accidents can be considered traumatic by most people, other events may be traumatic due to people’s subjective experience.

Experiencing a traumatic event can have either a transitory or an ongoing impact on psychological and physical states. Some people can easily overcome the impact of such an event, while others can be deeply affected in their ability to cope with the same situation. This can negatively affect how they perceive their environment and themselves. The brain gets rewired to maladaptive physical and mental responses, and the body gets stuck in a constant stress response.

How Does It Work?

Body–mind therapies use healing interventions that work with the body to access and change feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. These interventions work with the body’s wisdom and leverage personal resources from each client.
Unlike other forms of trauma therapy, this approach intentionally avoids directly evoking traumatic memories and, therefore, does not focus on thoughts and feelings related to the traumatic experience.

We approaches these memories using the body as a gateway, exploring them gradually and indirectly by promoting more adequate, safer, and comfortable bodily experiences.

SERVICESBiodynamic Craniosacral Therapy with Babies and Children

Its great to bring your baby for cranioscacral therapy soon after the birth and then at any time during the first year. The parents will be invited to be part of the session and as the baby responds to treatment, this shared experience can deepen the bonds within the new family.

Craniosacral Therapy is beneficial even if the pregnancy and birth were trouble free. It supports breastfeeding • developing good sleep patterns • early infant feeding problems including colic, reflux and allergies • torticollis (wry neck) • bonding with parents and siblings , processing a challenging birth for baby and parents. Young babies are cuddled and fed during treatment and older babies might play with their parents and the therapist.

Children of all ages come to me, accompanied by a parent, for issues that include physical , emotional and mental aspects .

I love engaging with little ones and will happiy work creatively with toys and drawings on the floor. We are more likely to find ourselves under the couch in a den rather then on it. There is no expectation that baby or young person need be still to receive this therapy

What is CST in Families

Craniosacral therapy has a good reputation for its effectiveness in helping women in pregnancy and for many of the ailments of young babies and children. This gentle treatment can ease backache, improve digestive problems of pregnancy and give the expectant mother much-needed relaxation. Parents commonly bring their babies for craniosacral therapy treatment if they are suffering from colic or other digestive problems, are unsettled or have problems sleeping.

Many women and their partners appreciate skilful and sympathetic help and support during these stages as well as when their children are older. Parenting can be a challenge during the various stages of child development and, over many years, CST has proved to be a valued resource for parents and their children.

How Does It Work?

From the moment of conception, a child’s life is a whirlwind of change and development. These many changes bring along their own challenges and it can be helpful to have a range of supportive “tools” to address the issues. CST is one such tool and is ideal for babies and children since the touch is extremely gentle and there is no need for clothing to be removed.

Practitioners respond to what they feel in a client’s body, so that a person of any age can be said to direct the session. This is vitally important when working with a child who may understandably have little control over some aspects of their life and wellbeing. CST enables them to begin the important process of being aware of, and responsible for, their own physical and emotional health. If a baby or child has had a stressful birth, CST can help relieve associated tensions and symptoms – perhaps enabling them to relax and enjoy life for the first time. It is not necessary for words to be used to convey how the treatment is being experienced, so it is ideal for babies and children with no, or limited, speech.

Will Family CST Help ?

Ideally bring newborns as soon after birth as you feel ready to leave the house. But its never too late to work with birth patterns, bonding and behavioural issues. The CranioSacral Therapeutic space can be the safe and neutral space that will make all the difference.

SERVICESEquine and Dog Craniosacral Therapy

If your horse or dog has physical, behavioural, emotional or relational issues, Craniosacral Therapy can help. This is an approach that deeply respects the spirit of an animal. A light, spacious touch works directly with the animal’s central nervous system, helping them release stress and tension. A horse or dog that shifts out of a fearful relationship with the world is able to access greater suppleness, energy, and capacity to learn and relate. Horses and dogs seem to love Cranio. It speaks their language !
In horses issues such as head shaking, lameness, hindquarter injuries, head trauma, jaw issues, colic, effects of early weaning or relocation can all be eased with this approach.
Lisa works with your horse in the stable or field. She can also offer sessions for the rider/trainer and horse together to support the development of a relationship based in trust and understanding.
